Open Space

Open Space is a series of meetings and research visits over eighteen months initially between artist Caroline Wright and national curator Ben Borthwick and latterly with curator Naomi Siderfin. The meetings will be recorded through this reflective blog and will document the making of a new body of work by Caroline Wright. A regional event will conclude the project in 2011

The project is moving slowly at the moment, and yet there is a lot happening. Ben has been appointed as CEO of Artes Mundi and will be moving to Cardiff shortly. We had hoped to get some time to chat at Latitude Festival but his role as curator of the exciting new Latitude Contemporary Art meant he was super busy.

Latitude was good again this year although my installation was less than straightforward, with a piece of neon getting broken and some difficulties with rigging and then electrical connections for the work. In the end I was pleased with the way the piece looked and glad to see that it again created a space of calm amongst the musical mayhem everywhere. The image shows a member of the public taking a photo of one of the neon pieces.

I am currently working on more drawings and hoping to pick up on some work done this time last year as part of the Crop Marks project in Cambridge. At Ben’s suggestion, I will be following up the connections made between people living on the Orchard Park housing estate to see if they have continued to meet. I hope this will result in some further visual work.
